How to fix high ping and lag in CS2

UPDATED

Is your CS2 lag the network or the server? How to read CS2 network stats, what ping is good enough, and the fixes that actually help.

CS2 is unforgiving about latency: with sub-tick movement and shooting, a high or unstable ping decides who gets the first shot in a peek. Before you blame the servers, find out what is actually going on.

See your real numbers in game

  • Open the console and enter cq_netgraph 1 for a live display of ping, packet loss and frame times.
  • In the game settings, the telemetry options let you show ping and packet loss permanently in a corner of the screen.
  • The “max acceptable matchmaking ping” setting stops matchmaking from putting you on far-away servers. Lower it if you keep landing in distant data centers.

What is good enough for CS2?

Under 40ms is ideal, up to 60ms is fine, above that you start to feel it in every duel. Jitter should stay under 15ms, and packet loss should be zero. Those are the limits Rekt-al Net uses for its verdict.

Lag or the server?

If only one match is bad and your ping display is normal, it is the server or the other players. If every match feels laggy, run the test against the data center you usually play on. If that is clean too, the problem is not your network.

The fixes that work for every game

  1. Use a cable. Wi-Fi adds a few milliseconds and, worse, random spikes whenever a neighbor's network or your microwave interferes. See Wi-Fi vs Ethernet.
  2. Stop everything else using the line. Cloud backups, game updates (Steam, Battle.net, consoles in rest mode), 4K streams and video calls in the same household. If your ping only goes bad when someone else is online, that is bufferbloat.
  3. Restart the router and modem. Boring, but consumer routers do degrade after weeks of uptime.
  4. Turn on QoS or SQM in the router, if it has it. Smart Queue Management (often called “fq_codel” or “CAKE”) is the single best fix for lag that appears under load.
  5. Pick the closest server region the game lets you choose. Every 1,000 km of fiber adds roughly 10ms of round trip.
  6. Check the route. If your ping is high only to one region while everything else is fine, your ISP may be routing badly. A gaming VPN (ExitLag (Werbung), WTFast and similar) can help in exactly this case, and only this case. If your own line is the problem, a VPN can't fix it.
